Land of Ice and... more ice.

A recent trip to Iceland was amazing although the Northern Lights were annoyingly absent behind cloud for the entire time. It is a stunning and bleak place, expecially in January. Black sand beaches, ice flows on the sea, low sun and no sun at all till 11.30am! I saw the only place in the world where the tectonic plates are visible above ground.... you can stand on the American Continent on one side and then walk four steps and stand on Europe, very odd. I am keen to return to this part of the world to try and see the lights again but it certainly wasn't a wasted trip. The coastline is stunning and despite the pain of the freezing cold weather the people are wonderful and the food delicious, although the alcohol is extortionate. And of course there are lots and lots and lots and lots of Icelandic ponies.
